If you're into your cases you will undoubtedly of heard of Otterbox. They have been causing a storm with their array of ultra protection cases for many different popular devices on the market. Well now Gumdrop wants a piece of the action. For now they only have cases for the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4, I don't know if they will be making cases for other devices.

Pros:
  • Cheaper than the Otterbox by a little
  • More protective and sturdy compared to the Otterbox Defender Series for the iPad 2
  • Easy removable and replaceable screen protector
Cons:
  • No kind of stand features
  • Adds quite a bit of weight

The case comes in 4 parts as you can see. Personally my favourite part is the screen protector. For people who have put a screen protector on their device will know how much of a pain it can be getting it on right without any dust and bubbles. This screen protector literally sits on top of the iPad without gluing itself to it so it is easily removable and actually replaceable if it gets damaged. However one thing about the screen protector is that it is very delicate and it seems to be stuck on to the plastic frame with glue which doesn't look good.

Thankfully you can't see this when the case is assembled. But I think Gumdrop could do a better job here. I might be being picky but for something this expensive you don't want to be seeing cheap things like this.

The back and sides of the case is mainly covered by silicon. This silicon is extra thick and tough compared to other silicon cases I've used before. I did many drop tests from about chest height, the height where you would usually hold your iPad when you're using it while standing. The case didn't even get a scratch. It sustained all drops on surfaces such as grass, tarmac and wooden floor boards. The same could not be said when I tested the Otterbox case which got a lot of scratches and just ruined the look.

However as you can see like any other silicon case it attracts a lot of dust.

The case is very thick which should be expected when you're looking for an ultra protective case.

All ports are easily accessible.

All the buttons have a raised piece of rubber over them which provides a very tactile feel. You'll definitely know you hit the button when using this case.

Overall
The Gumdrop Drop Series Ultimate Protection for the iPad 2 is undoubtedly out there to compete with Otterbox and I think they're going a right way about it. This case is for those who want ultimate protection and want to be secure that their iPad 2 won't get damaged from drops. It is just priced below the Otterbox cases but I've found that it provides better protection. The only thing I can see that is missing is a kind of stand feature which the Otterbox Defender Series has.

Price - £36.95
