Need People!

Ok well first of all I need a person who can make .9.png's. The guy I had has left Android and gone to iPhone...traitor! So I need someone who is willing to make .9.png's, obviously I'll be the one editing them and designing them.

Second I need theme testers for themes etc. Someone who is always willing to flash stuff over and willing to put their beloved Android phone on the line.

If you're serious about any of the two, let me know.

Email me motherfuckers!

First, obviously, the .9.png files (also called NinePatch) are just normal png files you can make in Photoshop or whatever.

Just take a look at NinePatch image in an image viewer. It's simply just a normal image, with an extra 1px border around the whole thing. Solid black pixels in this border will be the 'stretch' area (middles) and the transparent pixels in this border will be the static parts (corners).

In Photoshop, you can just grow your canvas by 2 pixels (leaving original in the middle). Then draw the black pixels in the border.

There is a tool to help with this, but I just use Photoshop:

  3. I use Adobe Photoshop too.

So can I still have a Ninepatch PNG just by leaving a 1px border and without having to put it through the "draw9patch" program?

  4. Yup! Just draw your black pixels in the 1px border for the areas you want to stretch out.

The draw9patch just helps you draw the border.. the end result is just a normal png file. it doesnt alter the file in any magic way.

Take an existing .9.png file and load it up in Photoshop, you will see the black + transparent border pixels.

  5. Ok I'm still a bit confused LOL.

Ok so first of all I make whatever I need to make in Photoshop.

Then I go to canvas settings and add 1 pixel all round the sides.

Then do I get a black brush and paint that border black or do I just leave it?

Thanks for the help so far!

  6. No problem.. I don't mind facilitating more awesome designs out of you :-)

You've almost got it. Your canvas settings is correct. You should use a black 1x1 pixel pencil (you don't want smoothing that a brush gives you) and draw in the border.

Did you open a .9.png file you have lying around in Photoshop?

Notice that some of the border pixels are black and some are transparent? The ones that are black are the areas that will stretch out. The ones that are transparent wont stretch. Given that, you will see the black border is only in the centers, and not in the corners.

You want to reproduce that idea for your images. So, if you have a 100x100 image, and you want 10x10 corners and the have the middle 80 pixels on each side stretch, then you draw 80 pixels of black on the borders, with 10 pixels of transparent border on the sides of that 80 pixels.

    Hope that makes sense...
